field notes

Santa catalina island  |  pimu

The Office of Outdoor and Environmental Education (OOEE) is requesting input from teachers and students regarding a virtual field trip. The storyline centers on two girls exploring a remote location on Catalina Island. Teachers and students are invited to pre-screen the video virtually and to send anonymous thoughts/responses via SurveyMonkey.

The teacher will control the showing on Vimeo and submit the survey findings. Student feedback will be incorporated into the video. Upon completion, there will be a virtual "opening night" presented by a special guest. Participating teachers and schools will be acknowledged in the credits. Survey results will be shared on “opening night.”

The video’s main purpose is to inform, create awareness, generate interest and demonstrate how to leverage outdoor spaces for self-care (social emotional learning/trauma). The target group is 4th-8th grade students, however all ages of students can benefit from watching this and engaging in conversation after. The video will be made available to teachers to share with students during a class session of their choosing.

The video and survey links will be active until October 9, 2020 at 6pm.

Student Health and Human Services has provided teacher resources for October 12 - 16 as part of LAUSD's Social Emotional Learning Curriculum. This is a frame to support ongoing purposeful focus on wellbeing and a sense of community in schools and classrooms.
